WINNING ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF PEACE AND WAR

Iaido is the Japanese martial art in which every fight begins with the sword in the scabbard. For the samurai master, these techniques are vital because an attack could come unexpectedly. Then you had to draw your sword in one move and hit the opponent. Iai could also be a reaction to a threat: the stronger samurai was the one who can scare off the enemy, just by sheathing his sword partially.

The techniques and principles that are perfected over the centuries are still being practiced in Iaido. At Kendo Kai Den Haag we train beside the twelve standard 'kata' (Seitei-iaido) Muso Shinden Ryu, also a style that goes back to the sixteenth century, when Japan was in a state of permanent civil war.

Always wanted to practice a (Japanese) martial arts? Or do you need to deepen your current understanding as a judoka? Then the beginner's course iaido is an excellent opportunity to join. To a very select group.

The beginner's course is ideal to get acquainted with the basic principles of iaido. For 11 weeks under the teachings of Cris Orlowski (5-Dan) en Michel Huisman (5-Dan) several issues, such as proper footwork, body position, stroke techniques, and etiquette are discussed.

The course consists of 10 lessons, followed by an examination in the 11th session. The first training will take place on Saturday the 14th of January, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

-Until 28 January: Sportcampus Zuiderpark, Mr. P. Droogleever Fortuynweg 25, Den Haag
-Thereafter: Novum-Maartenshal, Marcellus Emantslaan, 2274 KX Voorburg

  • The course fee is 90 euro. A bokuto (wooden sword) is included. Payment on the first evening, cash and preferable precisely the amount. You will also receive your bokuto at that time.
  • The minimum age is 15 years.
  • Apparel: iaido is practiced barefoot. For that reason, a t-shirt and sweatpants are sufficient. But try to get some (volleyball) knee protectors in case we do some sit techniques.
  • Also, a belt is desirable. That may be a judo or karate belt (the color does not matter to us), but everything that can hold a sword in place will do.
